Sharing a Memory

When glass breaks, the fracture can reach beyond the material. Glass holds light, but it also anchors memory—a shared journey, a quiet corner of home, or someone no longer here.

After any great loss, we face the task of building anew. A dear friend, Leslie, carried that weight when her husband passed away. Years earlier in Germany, they had found an antique pane of stained glass and brought it home as a keepsake of a joyful time. In the grief following his death, the glass fell and shattered. Leslie saved every piece; letting them go felt unthinkable.

When she asked me to reassemble the pane, I knew piecing together fractured edges wasn't right. A web of solder would only memorialize an accident. Her memories of him were living and bright. Instead of mending the past, we transformed it. The design flowed with energy and sunrise warmth. I shaped her salvaged shards into a new window dedicated to life, renewal, and hope: Rebirth.

Not all repairs are quite so emotional, of course. Sometimes an accident is just an accident.
