







Tensegrity Tables 1 & 2
This is neither an optical illusion nor a prank—the upper and lower sections of these tables do not actually touch. Instead, the top appears to float magically above the base. Ordinary cords, utilizing nothing but their own tensile strength, hold the entire structure together.
This is the magic of tensegrity (short for tensional integrity). It is a structural design principle where a continuous network of tensed cables holds a framework of rigid, separate bars in a stable, floating equilibrium. Because the rigid elements never touch, the structure relies entirely on the precise pull of the cables to maintain its shape, resulting in a piece that is incredibly lightweight yet exceptionally strong.
While many have tried constructing tensegrity tables, most attempts result in something visually appealing but functionally useless, where even a slight twist can cause a total collapse. To solve this, I designed a custom cabling jig that allowed me to test different layouts. Through this process, I successfully engineered a remarkably stable table capable of holding significant weight anywhere on its surface. For the second table, I further modified the wooden components to achieve an even better distribution of cable tension, resulting in unmatched stability.
Crafted from beautiful African mahogany, the wood is completely unstained and finished to let its natural grain and rich color shine. Properly distributing the tension load among all the tensile points is the ultimate key to this design, making these tables as functional as they are fascinating.
